Anomaly scan (TIFFA or ultrasound level II scan)

The anomaly, or target scan, is a detailed mid-pregnancy ultrasound scan. It's done to check your baby's age and growth, the level of amniotic fluid, the location of the placenta, and the structures of your baby's brain, heart, and other organs.

It looks for conditions, such as cleft lip and spina bifida. If an anomaly is found, it doesn't necessarily mean that your baby isn't developing well, but it will need further investigation. If the scan shows a low-lying placenta, you'll have a follow-up scan in your third trimester to recheck the location of your placenta.
